Grades sync to LMS from Coursera

GG4L offers two main options of grade sync to the LMS: final course grade sync and granular grade sync. Granular grade sync includes 2 different options.

Content:

1. Final Grade Sync

2. Granular Grade Sync

- Option A
- Option B

This short video presents the Grade Sync Options available for the Coursera - LMS integration:

Please Note: only one grade sync option can be chosen per organization. The grade sync option can be changed in the future if it does not suit the institution's needs. If you want to change the option, please reach out to support@gg4l.com to receive further guidance on how to proceed.

FINAL GRADE SYNC

Students will have a single grade for a course.

This option provides the sync of the final grade for the course back to the LMS. To set up this grade sync option, the following steps must be completed:

  1. GG4L provides the necessary instructions on how to set up an LTI tool in the LMS.
  2. The LTI Administrator of the educational organization creates the tool in the LMS and sends the required values (listed in the instructions) to the GG4L Customer Support team.
  3. GG4L Customer Support sets up a connection with the LTI tool created in the LMS.
  4. The links to the Coursera courses are published in the LMS by the instructors or LMS Admin.
  5. The students click the links and are redirected to Coursera. At this time GG4L School Passport platform receives the necessary LTI and LIS parameters to connect the student’s enrollment in the LMS and their results in Coursera.
  6. When the student completes the course, the School Passport platform pulls the final course results from Coursera via API request and sends them over to the LMS.

Note: as a rule, the grade sync takes around 48 hours (from the moment the student has completed the course to the moment the grade is published in the LMS). The reason for this is that Coursera should process the grade on their side before they can share it with GG4L (≈ 24 hours), and after that, the GG4L team syncs the data from our platform to the LMS once a day, which adds another 24 hours to the sync process.

GRANULAR GRADE SYNC

Option A.

Granular grade sync flow (DeepLink per gradable items) - Students will have separate grades for each course assignment (DeepLink).

This option provides the sync of the grades for all gradable items in a course separately back to the LMS. The instructor publishes the link exactly to the specific gradable items (quizzes/tests/labs/etc.) in the Coursera сourse and only the grades for the published gradable items are transferred back to the LMS.

  4. The links to the assignments of Coursera courses are published in the LMS by the instructors or LMS Admin.
  5. The students click the links and get redirected to Coursera. At this time GG4L School Passport platform receives the necessary LTI and LIS parameters to connect the student’s enrollment in the LMS and their results in Coursera.
  6. When the student completes an assignment (a gradable item) of a Coursera course, the School Passport platform pulls the results from Coursera via API request and sends them over to the LMS.

Note: the students must click on each of the published links to the gradable items. When the students click one of the links they are redirected to the course and can complete all the assignments, however, there must be a connection between the user’s account in LMS and their result in Coursera.

Option B.

Granular grade sync with assignment auto-creation - Students will have grades for all the gradable items (quizzes/tests/labs/etc) of the course populated automatically to the LMS grade book.

This option provides the sync of the grades for all course assignments in bulk to the LMS. The instructor will publish the link to the Coursera course and the grades for all the gradable items (tests/quizzes/labs/etc.) will be transferred back to the LMS (BUT there will be no final grade for the whole course in the LMS grade book).

Note: the entries for the grades for gradable items will appear in the LMS grade book after at least one of the students receives a grade for that activity.

To set up this grade sync option, the next steps must be completed:

  5. The students click the links and get redirected to Coursera. At this time GG4L School Passport platform receives the necessary LTI and LIS parameters to connect the student’s enrollment in the LMS and their results in Coursera.
  6. When the student completes an activity (test/quiz/etc.) in Coursera, the School Passport platform pulls the results from Coursera via API request and sends them over to the LMS.

Additionally: if the grade did not appear in the LMS grade book 2 days after the completion, please ask the student to click on the link to the course again. If it did not help solve the issue, reach out to support@gg4l.com and provide the following info: course name, student’s email, and the course completion date.
